Losing weight can bring a huge number positive changes to your health and to your confidence. When you lose weight, you reduce the amount of strain on your heart and your circulatory system, immediately giving yourself more energy and making pretty much every activity that much easier and more enjoyable.
At the same time, losing weight reduces your likelihood of numerous illnesses and conditions including diabetes, varicose veins, high blood pressure, stroke and more.
But what is also incredibly valuable is the way losing weight makes you feel about yourself. For many people, being overweight is a source of embarrassment and can damage their confidence. They feel less attractive in their clothes, less happy with the way they look and less willing to dress in a way that shows off their physique.
And when you don’t feel happy with the way you look, it can have a huge impact on your self-esteem – potentially even leading to depression. And what a lot of people don’t realize, is that overweight people can actually find themselves the subjects of a lot of discrimination and prejudice.
This is why treatments like liposuction can offer such a transformation for the right patients – helping them to instantly regain the body shape they’re looking for in a manner that is non-invasive, safe and quick.
Liposuction involves the use of a cannula, which is a small tube that can be inserted into the body at the point where fat is intended to be removed. One of several methods will be used to break up the fat cells and from there, they can then be removed via suction. This results in an immediate, visible reduction in size and this has both aesthetic and health benefits for the patient.
Following the suction, you will normally find the area of the body is wrapped in order to reduce swelling, bruising and pain. You might also be given a girdle, or another supportive garment depending on the area that has been treated.
The traditional form of liposuction involves the insertion of the cannula, which will then be moved backward and forward, which will cause the breakdown of the fat. From here, it will be ready to be suctioned out of the body using a high pressured device.
This was once the most common form of liposuction and is referred to as a ‘dry procedure’ because no liquid is involved. However, it is used less commonly today, as it is known to cause more bleeding and nerve damage as compared with other methods.
More common these days are the wet and super wet methods, which involve the same procedure but with the insertion of liquid to the area being treated. The ‘super wet’ method is the exact same but with even more liquid. Here, the amount of water used is usually equal to the amount of fat being removed – and this can help to reduce discomfort.
Tumescent liposuction meanwhile involves the insertion of three times more water than fat! This is done in order to swell the treatment area and thereby help to separate the fat cells from the surface of the skin. This makes it considerably easier to then suction the fat out through the cannula and reduces the amount of damage caused by the surgery. The solution itself will normally include an anaesthetic.
Ultrasonic assisted liposuction does what it says on the tin – using ultrasonic sound waves in order to break the fat up into liquid. This can significantly reduce the bruising and healing time but has the unfortunate side effect of potentially causing burns.
Laser assisted liposuction does the same thing using a laser to soften the fat. The laser also reduces the risk of bleeding by sealing the blood vessels. Finally, high volume liposuction is a type of liposuction designed to remove more fat in one go. This is riskier and can lead to high amounts of blood loss. This will normally be reserved for emergency situations where the patient needs to lose large amounts of weight.
Liposuction also has the advantage of being a relatively fast, affordable and non-invasive treatment. However, it is normal to experience bruising, swelling, redness and discomfort. Normally, patients will be able to get up and move around as soon as the treatment has worn off. Most people will be able to return to work in a couple of days.
Generally, the less fat is removed in a single session, the less serious the side effects will be for the patient and the sooner they’ll be able to return to normal activity. If you require a large amount of fat to be removed, then it is generally advised that you have multiple separate treatments in order to have it done over a longer period of time.
Another issue with removing large amounts of fat is that it can leave sagging skin. Skin stretches when we gain weight and this means that once you’ve shed the pounds, you might be left with it dangling. It’s a good idea then to make the changes slowly, or to consider having a tuck following the liposuction, in order to remove the excess flesh.
Depending on the type of liposuction you get, the skill of the surgeon and the amount of fat you wish to have removed, you can expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to $15,000 for each treatment. Do keep in mind that other costs might also be associated with the procedure – such as the cost of medication and painkillers, the time you take off of work and more. This will not usually be covered by health insurance.
The great thing about liposuction is that it allows for spot reduction. In other words, it is possible to select the specific part of the body where you want to see a reduction in fat and then to remove it from that area alone. This is very different from other fat loss methods – if you use exercise and dieting to lose fat, then it is impossible to lose the weight from a specific region.
This means that you can end up losing fat from your breasts for a long time, before it eventually gets to the stomach fat that you actually want to lose and that can be used to design curves and other aspects of your physique.
Compared with other, traditional forms of fat loss, it also has the advantage of being immediate. This means that you can walk out of the treatment with a much slimmer body that will make you feel a lot more confident.
Liposuction is suitable for anyone who is in good health and wants to lose weight. However, it is generally recommended that the patient try traditional methods of weight loss first. Before getting liposuction, it is useful to try a combination of diet and exercise, which should help the individual to lose weight, tone their muscle and generally improve their physique naturally.
Unfortunately, losing weight is a lot harder for some people than others. Metabolic differences can have a huge impact on your ability to lose weight and if you are struggling, then it might be that you have an underactive thyroid or another complaint that is making it hard for you to see changes.
If you have tried diet and exercise and had no luck, then liposuction becomes a viable option.
This is also popular for new Mums. Many women find that after giving birth, they struggle to lose weight and regain their old shape. It is of course very normal to put on weight during pregnancy but not all of this is going to fall away after giving birth. The combination of lifestyle changes, hormonal changes and the body adapting to its new size means that traditional methods often just won’t work.
It’s very important to note however that patients should always follow liposuction with a change in lifestyle. If you have liposuction and then continue to eat too many calories, then you will very quickly regain the weight you lost – and these sudden fluctuations in weight will not be good for your body.
Of course other methods are also available for rapid weight loss, including tummy tucks and gastric bands. It is important to discuss your options with a cosmetic surgeon before deciding on the best option for you. It is best to think of this as a jumping off point – a way to get a head start and to begin a weight loss program that will actually be effective.
If you do decide to go ahead with liposuction though, then you will find that it brings an immediate and very noticeable change to your body, which can leave you feeling more confident, more energetic and healthier. In that case, it will have been more than worth the small amount of discomfort.
Still not sure if liposuction is right for you? Then why not take a look through these before and after pictures to get a better idea of what you can expect and just what kind of change is possible with the right procedure.
